action

The series is set in Ponyville, a small town in the Kingdom of Equestria. The ponies of this country rule nature. So each and every one of them has a special task to carry out. The Erdponys maintain the interests of animal and plant life, the Pegasus ponies control to fly due to their ability and clouds to manipulate the weather and the processes in the air and the unicorn ponies can use to apply their horns magic, which they use in their special fields. A few are Pegasus unicorns , called Alihorns (in the English version Alicorns ), which combine all the advantages. The special talent of a pony is reflected in the symbol of the "cutie mark", which appears above the hip joint as soon as the pony has discovered its individual talent . In addition to the pony breeds, there are other intelligent ungulates such as donkeys and cows as well as mythical creatures such as griffins and minotaurs in Equestria.

The story begins with the appearance of the pony Twilight Sparkle in Ponyville, because her teacher Princess Celestia has asked her to find out the secrets of friendship there. She is accompanied by the baby dragon Spike, who regulates the correspondence between teacher and pupil. She gets to know the ponies Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy and Rarity and has many adventures with them. The majority of the episodes deal with the everyday life of the ponies in Ponyville, but in some they also face greater threats to Equestria together. Most episodes end with Twilight Sparkle summarizing the moral of the episode in a letter to Princess Celestia; From the second season this task is also taken over by other ponies or is completely eliminated and from the fourth season it is replaced by diary entries .

While most of the episodes are self-contained, there are some storylines that stretch across multiple episodes. For example, at the beginning of the first season, Twilight and her friends receive tickets to the grand galloping gala, in a later episode Rarity designs the dresses for the gala, which then takes place as the season finale. In the third and fourth seasons, several episodes involve the preparation and execution of the Equestria Games, a major sporting event. Towards the end of the second episode of the fourth season, the protagonists find a locked box and, in various later episodes, six associated keys. With these you can open the box in the final episode of the season, whereby you not only defeat the antagonist of this episode, but Twilight also receives a lock to replace your destroyed library.

background

production

Lauren Faust, executive producer and author of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

After toy retailer Hasbro was able to significantly increase sales of its Transformers product line thanks to the success of the movie of the same name , Hasbro decided to start a new edition of the originally traditionally hand-drawn My Little Pony series. Hasbro chose the animator, writer and doll designer Lauren Faust , who together with her husband had created the Powerpuff Girls , among other things , in order to develop a new, appealing concept. As executive producer and author of the series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic , she developed the new characters and their stories in the magical land of Equestria with employees who are well experienced in their respective fields. Flash animations were used for the animation. According to her own statements, she played a lot with Hasbro's My Little Pony toy range in her childhood . When she was hired for the new series on behalf of Hasbro, she worked through the characters she gave in the game to the six ponies she played with most and her memories of the crew as a template for the new series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic submitted. Adobe Flash is used to animate the episodes .

Fan scene

Although the target audience of the series is young girls, starting with the imageboard 4chan , it has developed into an internet phenomenon. In addition to the actual target audience, a fan base has established itself primarily in the Anglo-American region, which consists mainly of young and adult male members. These fans, who call themselves bronies , a suitcase word from bro (colloquial short for brother ) and pony , in German for example pony brothers , create fanart and fan fiction , discuss various aspects of the series or organize meetings outside of the internet. Adult women can also be found in smaller numbers in these fan circles ; these are sometimes referred to as pegasisters , although the female followers now also use the masculine term to denote and are referred to. Many aspects of the series have developed into Internet memes that can also be found on non-topic imageboards and forums.

In Germany, the first fan convention Grand Galloping Gala (short or since 2013 GalaCon ) took place from August 11 to 12, 2012 . The almost one and a half hour documentary Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony and the 80-minute film A Brony Tale , in which several speakers from the series also participated , were released via fandom . The creators of the series picked up on and implemented various common ideas from fandom, so characterizations of ponies that previously only appeared in the background were taken over into the series.

Policy implications

Within the German Pirate Party , episodes of the series are used to calm down heated discussions, to relax the participants and to concentrate on solving a problem instead of dealing with a conflict. The term pony time has established itself for this purpose. After a vote, this break was included in the rules of procedure of the pirate party faction in Berlin. When you apply, an appropriate sequence for the current topic is selected and played.
