action

The Equestria ponies prepare for their first Friendship Festival, overseen by Princess Twilight Sparkle in Canterlot. The festivities are interrupted by an invasion of monstrous storm creatures. The attack is led by the unicorn Tempest Shadow. The unicorn has a broken horn, but can use magical obsidian balls to petrify the four princesses. Princess Celestia unsuccessfully urges Princess Luna to get help south of Equestria and reach the Queen of the Hippos. However, all three princesses are petrified. Twilight flees with her five pony friends and her assistant, the dragon Spike, to visit the hippo queen. Tempest is contacted by her supervisor, the Storm King, who reminds her to gather all the Princesses of Equestria so he can activate his followers with their magic. He promises to restore her horn in return.

In the desert town of Klugetown, a feline artist named Capper mistakenly offers the ponies to take her to the Queen, but it turns out to be an ambush to pay off his debt to a gangster. He becomes friends with them after Rarity generously mends his coat. Twilight discovers an atlas on Capper's shelf that reveals the whereabouts of the "hippos" and shows that they are hippogriff. The gangster appears and wants to take the ponies with him. But Tempest puts the gangster out of action. With Capper in tow, she follows the fleeing ponies. They save themselves on an airship and are initially safe. Tempest interrogates Capper about the whereabouts of Twilight, but he gives a wrong location so that Twilight can buy time. The ponies are discovered by the crew on the airship. The airship's bird crew hesitates to throw the seven passengers overboard. During a lunch break, the team turns out to be a former gang of pirates who have been forced into the service of the Storm King. Rainbow Dash persuades the pirates to forget the king's orders and accompany them on their journey to the hippogriffs. They set course for Mount Aris, and Rainbow Dash performs a Sonic Rainboom, but it reveals its location to Tempest. Annoyed by the carelessness of her friends, Twilight devises an escape plan and escapes in a hot air balloon with her pony friends. Tempest is furious and destroys the pirates' ship in the presence of Capper.

The seven reach Mount Aris. After following a voice to a well, they are carried away into a vortex. There they meet the Seapony Princess Skystar, who gives them bubble helmets and takes them to their underwater house at Seaquestria. Skystar identifies their species as the hippogriff that were turned into seaponys with the help of a magical pearl that was used by her mother, Queen Novo, to hide from the Storm King. Novo turns the ponies into seaponys and Spike into a puffer fish. When Novo refuses to give them the pearl, Twilight tries to steal the pearl. Pinkie and the others, however, manage to change Novo's mind with a song. However, Twilight triggers an alarm and the angry Novo banishes all seven of them to the surface. After an argument with her friends, Tempest abducts Twilight. Tempest tells Twilight her story: When she was a little foal, she lost her horn in an attack by a monster. Since she could only spray uncontrolled sparks because of it, her friends turned away from her out of fear and she has lived alone since then. Meanwhile, Twilight's friends reunite with Capper, the pirates and the hippogriff Skystar, who has secretly taken the magic pearl with her to infiltrate Canterlot and to save Twilight. When they stopped the king's army, the Storm King sent a tornado toward the city. Tempest, previously betrayed by the king, is now fighting the king and is about to fall from the castle balcony when Twilight saves her. Twilight leaps towards the Storm King and snatches the scepter from him. The Storm King hurls an obsidian ball at the seven, but Tempest jumps in front of the ponies and is petrified along with the king. The Storm King's body falls and shatters as Twilight and her friends use the wand's magic to save Tempest. The other petrified ponies are transformed back. The friendship festival continues, and the ponies celebrate with all of the allies they have met on their adventure. Tempest is convinced by Twilight to join them. She wants to show Twilight and the others a fireworks display by this time firing controlled sparks from her broken horn. Tempest and Twilight are happy because Ponyville society accepts Tempest as a new resident and Tempest the magic of friendship with one another.
