The fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a disease caused by non-inflammatory proliferation of connective tissue and smooth muscle in the wall of arteries is defined. It mostly occurs in young women. The cause is not known.

Fibromuscular dysplasia can be associated with all symptoms of vascular bed narrowing. Frequently affected vessels are renal artery (leads to high blood pressure ) and internal carotid artery (carotid artery) (leads to neurological symptoms ). It can lead to secondary aldosteronism .

A string of pearl-like stenosis is diagnosed in digital subtraction angiography . The definitive diagnosis is made by histological evidence in a sample after biopsy . There is no specific therapy. Angioplasty is often successful in symptomatic patients . A stent is usually not implanted here.
