Fiby urskog is a primeval forest (partly spruce , partly mixed forest ) and nature reserve in the Swedish province of Uppsala län . The trees are up to 300 years old. The area is located about 15 kilometers west of Uppsala on the banks of the lake Fibysjön of the same name and covers an area of 87 hectares, of which about 70 hectares are land. The status of a nature reserve was granted in 1965. The forest is also a Natura 2000 area and is of imperial interest .
history
The forest was examined more closely by Rutger Sernander during an excursion in 1910 . Today it is an important observation area u. a. for the regeneration of forests after a storm. In the years 1931/1932, major damage was caused by storms. The biologists at Uppsala University recorded the condition and were able to get the fallen trees to remain. Investigations in the 1980s confirmed that the old trees are badly rotten and can hardly be seen, but that young spruce trees stand one behind the other on them. Together with the nearby forest in Granskär , the forest in Fiby is today the best-documented example of the development of succession in forests with storm damage.
