Spruce chip reaction

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The spruce chip reaction is a qualitative proof of pyrrole derivatives such as indole and furan .

A spruce chip moistened with hydrochloric acid turns red with fumes from pyrrole and its derivatives (e.g. indole ); hence the naming (Greek: pyrros: fire red, Latin: oleum: oil). Monosubstituted furans with a short alkyl chain turn green, more highly substituted furans turn permanganate red, and water turn blue or red-violet.
