The history of the Fifth Third Bank goes back to June 17, 1858, when the "Bank of the Ohio Valley" opened in Cincinnati, which was taken over five years later by the younger "The Third National Bank".

On June 1, 1908, the two banks "The Fifth National Bank" and "The Third National Bank" merged to form the "Fifth Third National Bank of Cincinnati". The name was subsequently changed several times until the bank was given the current name "Fifth Third Bank" on March 24, 1969.

Popularity with phishers

The name and logo of the Fifth Third Bank have often been misused by phishers . According to McAfee , in early September 2006, over 33 percent of registered phishing emails were related to the Fifth Third Bank.
