Fiji Museum
The Fiji Museum ( Fiji Museum ) is an ethnographic museum opened in 1955 in Suva , Fiji , located in the Thurston Gardens Botanical Gardens .
The museum houses a large archaeological collection spanning 3,700 years and, as a folklore museum, relics of indigenous cultural history. Special features are e.g. B. Exhibition objects such as the stern rudder of the HMS Bounty or the second Drua known with the name "Ratu Finau" , a Fijian double outrigger canoe ( wangga ndrua ).
Major directors who expanded the museum into a research facility were RA Derrick, B. Palmer, and Fergus Clunie , the current director is Sagale Buadromo.
The legal basis is the Fiji Museum Act and the Preservation of Objects of Archaeological & Palaeontological Interest Act . The State of Fiji has also entrusted the museum with the handling of recent archaeological and anthropological research requests, especially from foreign institutions.
The museum housed the Secretariat of the Pacific Islands Museums Association (PIMA) until 2006, which is then based in Port Vila , Vanuatu . There is a collaboration with the Museum Victoria in Melbourne , who present parts of their collections online.
