Filchner Trough

The Filchner Trough is a deep sea channel in the Weddell Sea in Antarctica . It extends from the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in a northerly direction.
The channel was named at the suggestion of the surveyor and glaciologist Heinrich Hinze from the Alfred Wegener Institute . It is named after the German polar explorer Wilhelm Filchner (1877–1957), head of the Second German Antarctic Expedition (1911–1912). The designation has been recognized by the Advisory Committee for Undersea Features since June 1997 .
