The Filchner Cliffs are a group of rocky cliffs , partly washed over by the sea, off the south-eastern end of South Georgia . They are 6 km northeast of Cape Vahsel .
The British navigator James Cook discovered the cliffs in 1775 on his second voyage to the South Seas (1772–1775). Participants in the Second German Antarctic Expedition (1911–1912) mapped it and named it after the expedition leader Wilhelm Filchner (1877–1957).
