Catholic branch church hl. Georg in Schranawand

The Roman Catholic branch church Schranawand is located in Schranawand in the municipality of Ebreichsdorf in Lower Austria . The Church of St. George belongs to the deanery Weigelsdorf in the vicariate Unter dem Wienerwald in the Archdiocese of Vienna . The church and the cemetery wall are under monument protection.

history

The place is first mentioned in 1120 as Scranwat , when the boundaries of the mother parish Traiskirchen were described. In 1320 Ulrich von Schranewaten was allowed to build a church. The parish was independent until the 15th century, then at Ebreichsdorf and from 1721 at Unterwaltersdorf.

architecture

The early Gothic church is still surrounded by the cemetery. It consists of a nave and a recessed choir square. On the north side is a lancet window with a pointed arch that was uncovered in 1976, and there are also some baroque round windows. The north tower with slit windows has a sound floor with Tuscan columns and a curved pointed helmet (renewed in the 19th century).

Interior

During restoration work in the 1970s, frescoes were discovered on the front of the choir. They date from the time the church was built (1320/1330). Depicted are St. Mary with the baby Jesus and St. Catherine . Two sacrament houses with ornamental frames were also uncovered.
