Work and reception

The study for the book Information and Communication in Venice: Rethinking Early Modern Politics was originally written as de Vivos PhD thesis at the University of Cambridge under the direction of Peter Burke . With its multi-faceted compilation of primary sources (council debates, inquisition documents, court minutes, handwritten and printed pamphlets) de Vivo's study overtakes previous contributions by placing Venice's position on the interdict in the largest possible context.

According to James Shaw of the University of Sheffield , de Vivo thereby gains a new understanding of political information by viewing it as a communicative act in a social context. De Vivo divides this communication into three levels: 1. Communication within the government, 2. Communication within a "political arena" with certain political actors, 3. Communication within a broad "public sphere". He draws a detailed picture of the official processes and reveals the involvement of steering committees within the Venetian government and their influence on public discourse.

From 2012 to 2016, de Vivo carried out a large-scale, collaborative study of the history of archives from the late Middle Ages to the dawn of modern Italy. Together with the post-docs Andrea Guidi and Giacomo Giudici, he investigated the structure, management and use of archives between the 13th and 18th centuries. In the publications that followed, they show the manifold importance of the archives as centers, not only for preservation, but also for the organization and production of knowledge. The project was financed by the European Research Council, among others .
