Peter Burke

Peter Burke (born August 16, 1937 in Stanmore ) is a British historian .

Life

Peter Burke was born to an Irish Catholic father and a Jewish mother of Polish and Lithuanian descent and attended a Jesuit school in north London until he was 17 . He then studied at St John's College , Oxford . He has taught at the School of European Studies at the University of Sussex . Since 1978 he has been a professor of cultural history at the University of Cambridge . His research focus is the Renaissance in general and its social history in particular. Another focus is his work on historiography , especially on the Annales school . In what is probably his most famous essay with the programmatic title Did Europe Exist Before 1700? Burke advocated the thesis that European consciousness did not emerge until the 18th century.

Burke is married to the Brazilian historian Maria Lúcia Garcia Pallares-Burke .
