history

The film collection of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México goes back to the producer Manolo Barbachano , who donated Raices y Torreros to the university. In 1959 the idea came up to bundle the film activities of the UNAM and to set up the Filmoteca. It was founded in 1960, but struggled with problems in the first few years. In 1997 a new building of the Filmoteca de al UNAM was opened in the Ciudad Universitaria, which houses the film collection in a modern way and thus better protects and preserves it. In 2003 the original version of the film Los olivados by Luis Buñuel , which is owned by the Filmoteca, was placed on the UNESCO list of world heritage documents . The nomination was supported by the Cineteca Nacional . In 2003 the Filmoteca was awarded the Mexican Ariel de Oro Film Prize.

collection

The collection includes around 40,000 films, 10,000 posters, 83,000 still images and 15,000 other documents such as books and magazines. This makes it one of the most important and extensive institutions of this type in Latin America. The films come from Mexico and all over the world and have been stored under state-of-the-art conditions since 1997 and the inventory is constantly being secured. The collection includes rare and exceptional film material. About 30 porn films from the years 1920 to 1950, all of which were silent or whose soundtrack was lost. They come from a time when pornography was banned and cover various subjects. The original version of the film Los olivados by Luis Buñuel, which is owned by the Filmoteca, is on the UNESCO list of world heritage documents . In 1999, Filmoteca employees found an alternative ending for Los olivados . Various scenes have also been found that Buñuel did not use in the finished film, such as El Jaibo seducing his friend's mother. With these finds, a deeper insight into Buñuel's working method and work of his time in Mexico was possible.
