Filotheos Skoufos

Filotheos Skoufos ( Greek Φιλόθεος Σκούφος ; † 1685 in Zakynthos ) was a Greek monk and painter of saints of the 17th century.

Life

Skoufos was born in Chania , Crete . He was abbot of the Chrysopigis Kantanou Monastery (Χρυσοπηγής Καντάνου) in Kandanos . In the Cretan War from 1645 to 1669 he took part with his monks on the side of the Venetians . He tried on the side of Metropolitan Athanasios Bellerianos to support the residents in the resistance. He later fled to Venice. From 1665 it is documented that he worked in the church of Panagias Laurentainas in Zakynthos , which he renovated.

One suspects a collaboration with Emmanouil Tzane . He often depicted entire scenes. His signature was often used to increase the value of other people's pictures. Examples of this can be found in the book L'école crétoise by Alexandros Empirikos.
