Surname

Psatida got its name during the time of the Crusades or the rule of the Hospitallers . The name comes from the Romance languages ; "Bastida" means "fortress".

history

The oldest evidence of the place dates back to around 1204 when the crusaders were looking for new challenges and easy prey during the Fourth Crusade . The first mention of the place and its inhabitants can be found in a decree of the knights of 1479. The then Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson , due to the great danger of Turkish attacks, issued the following decree: “In the event of an enemy attack, the inhabitants of Trianta and Kremasti should stay in their fortresses to guard the fleet. The places Pastida and Maritsa are said to have taken refuge in the fortress of Rhodes. ” Ceramics from graves have also been found in the place, which may go back to residents of the nearby Ialysus . On June 5, 1854, the French traveler Victor Guérin visited the place and wrote a short entry in his diary: “Twenty-five minutes further north is the small town of Pastida, which consists of about 20 houses. It lies in the middle of a plane and this plane is called Kamari. "

During the time of the Italian occupation, the inhabitants first cheered the Italians as liberators. From 1912 and until the liberation they at least kept this appearance. At the time of the "Bloody Easter" (Αιματηρού Πάσχα) in 1919, the residents demonstrated for the return to the motherland. In 1922, the governor Alessandro De Bosdari (Μποσδάρη) recorded 259 inhabitants in Patrida, the peasant leader G. Smaragdi (Γ. Σμαραγδή) and an elementary school with 26 students, a teacher and three classrooms, as well as the church of Agios Nikolaos (Αγίολς Νικοάος). In the years from 1940 to 1945 (Δωδεκανησιακής Αντίστασης) many residents quietly participated in the resistance. When the English and their Greek supporters (Σύμμαχοι στη Ρόδο και στα Δωδεκάνησα) arrived in 1945 , the residents of pastida cheered them.

In 1961 the place had 595 inhabitants. In recent years the place has experienced enormous growth through tourism and the real estate boom. The population has risen to 3,000, the elementary school now has 12 classes.
