Final Fantasy X-2 ( Japanese フ ァ イ ナ ル フ ァ ン タ ジ ー X-2 , Fainaru Fantajī Ten-Tsū) is a video game by Square Enix from 2003, which was released in Europe on February 20, 2004 exclusively for the Sony PlayStation 2 . The game was launched in Japan on March 13, 2003 and in the United States on November 18, 2003 and on February 24, 2004 in Germany. It is the first direct sequel to part of the Final Fantasy series. This breaks the long-standing tradition that every Final Fantasy part takes place in a new world. The plot ties in with that of the predecessor Final Fantasy X , which is why numerous well-known people and locations appear.

action

Two years after the destruction of Sin in the world of Spira, Yuna now lives as a "high medium" in her home country, an island called Besaid. One day after the other goes by, and Yuna should actually be happy, but all she can think about is what happened to Tidus and whether she will ever see him again. One day, her former companion Rikku comes to her and shows Yuna a spheroid with picture messages on which she seems to recognize her lost friend. Despite everything, Yuna is not sure and wants to know whether it is actually Tidus and whether he is perhaps still alive. Rikku is also ready to follow the spheroid's clues to look for traces of its whereabouts. Thus begins a long journey of search for Yuna, on which she and her companions encounter new problems and conflicts in the world of Spira. She joins the Seagull Pack, a group made up of brother - Rikku's brother, buddy, Shinra - a young and highly intelligent Al-Bhed, Paine - a new and enigmatic group member, and Rikku. They fly from one place to another at Celsius to look for spheroids. They also get competition from the Leblanc gang . Spira has also split into new groups: New Yevon , a party with the new leader Baralai that is in conflict with the Young League , a group full of young, belligerent people led by Nooj. Another group are the Apparatists headed by Al-Bhed Gippel, who want to familiarize people with the machines that were previously banned and who are carrying out excavations in the Bikanel desert. On her journey, Yuna learns more and more about Spira's past and finally decides to stop the impending danger, the colossus Vegnagun, a 1000 year old weapon in the hands of the man they believed to be Tidus: Shuyin. It seems this Shuyin is a dead man who mourns his death and that of his beloved Lenne. He wants revenge on Spira and tries to destroy everything with the help of Vegnagun.

The main motivation and purpose of the game, however, is to find Tidus, which ends in several endings: With a very small percentage, the bad end occurs: Yuna first hears a few whistles, she turns around looking for Tidus. Then the ghost of Tidus appears behind her and takes her in his arms. Yuna realizes that Tidus was with her the whole time, in her heart. The good end occurs when you press the X button at certain points and have a fairly high percentage: Tidus emerges from the sea, Celsius appears in the sky and Yuna jumps out of the airship and runs into Tidus' arms. The perfect end occurs when you achieve 100 percent: The good ending is shown and then Tidus and Yuna stand in front of the ruins in Zanarkand.

Special features and gameplay

  • In contrast to the predecessor Final Fantasy X , the tried and tested "Active Time Battle" (ATB) system is used as the combat system. Depending on the speed value and the costume of the character, the ATB bar fills up and enables him to carry out an action.
There is also a new play element, the handling of costume spheroids. These are similar to the job system from earlier parts of the series. For example, there are black magicians, warriors and thieves. During the fight, depending on the costume range selected, the costume can be changed. Thus the status values and techniques of the character can be changed during a fight. Ability points that are gained during battles can be used to learn new abilities for the various costumes. In addition, each character can be equipped with two accessories that affect status values, cause immunity to status changes, allow techniques from another costume to be used or have other effects on the wearer.
  • Another innovation is the use of a non-linear mission system for the first time, in which the player can decide for himself which mission to start next. So he can steer the story in different directions himself. This is based on the game Final Fantasy Tactics . This also affects the game progress value, which is displayed as a percentage. This also decides on the end sequence.
  • For the first time there is also the possibility to start a new one after successfully completing the game, in which you can take your learned abilities and found items and costumes with you. There are also additional mini-games in the game.

Awards

  • Final Fantasy X-2 won Sony's Double Platinum PlayStation Award in 2003 for over 2 million units sold in Japan
