Firminus from Mende

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Firminus von Mende († around 402 in Banassac ) was a missionary and bishop of the late 4th century in Gévaudan .

Lore

The current mediaeval sources contain no information on Firminus. According to regional tradition, he was bishop in the area of the Gabalier , a Celtic tribe in the area of today's city of Mende in the Lozère department . Possibly he was one of the successors of Privatus von Mende , he was distinguished by his strength of faith and education.

Firminus is possibly identical with Firminus of Amiens or his successor in office Firmin the Younger. Originally located in Javols , the region's diocese was moved to Mimate , today's Mende , in the 10th century .

Adoration

Firminus is hardly venerated even in the region around Mende; his chimney-like tomb, rediscovered and examined in 1956, can be seen in the church of Banassac - but only the relief of a miter indicates a bishop buried here. His feast day is January 14th.

presentation

Medieval statues or other portraits of Firminus are not known.
