Javols is a former French commune with 334 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lozère department in the Occitanie region . The inhabitants are called Javolais.
With effect from January 1, 2017, it became a Commune nouvelle with the former municipalities of Aumont-Aubrac , Fau-de-Peyre , La Chaze-de-Peyre , Sainte-Colombe-de-Peyre and Saint-Sauveur-de-Peyre united under the name Peyre en Aubrac . Since then it has had the status of a Commune déléguée there .
history
Javols was called Anderitum in Celtic times and was the main town of the Gaulish Gabali tribe . The name Anderitum means at the ford or at the ford . The Romans called Anderitum in Gabalum to (from which Javols was), after which the surrounding area then in the Middle Ages as Pagus Gabalum ( Gévaudan was designated).
In the 3rd century Javols became a bishopric ( Diocese of Javols ); the first bishop was St. Privatus of Mende . In the 5th century the place was so badly affected by the migration of peoples that it did not recover from it, with the result that the bishopric was moved to Mende in the middle of the 10th century ( diocese of Mende ).
The excavations from the history of the place can be visited in the Salle d'Exposition des Fouilles Archéologiques de Javols .
