Fjaðrárgljúfur

Fjaðrárgljúfur (from the river name Fjaðrá and Icelandic Gljúfur "Canyon") is a canyon in the south of Iceland , about eight kilometers west of Kirkjubæjarklaustur .

It can be reached via the F206 road. The gorge is up to 100 meters deep in some places and has a length of about two kilometers. The gorge was created by the power of the flowing water, which came from the glaciers and paved its way through the palagonite rock and dug deeper and deeper over the millennia. The eponymous river Fjaðrá flows through it . The gorge is under nature protection.
