The flat root beetle ( Rhizophagus depressus ) is a beetle from the family of detritus beetles (Monotomidae).
features
The rust-brown colored beetles are 2.8-4.5 mm long. The head and pronotum are irregularly punctured. The pronotum is longer than it is wide. This is rounded at the front corners. The elytra are more than twice as long as the pronotum. The second space between the wing coverts is widened at the front and has an additional incomplete row of points or has a few superfluous, irregularly arranged points. The lateral point stripes of the wing covers are only weakly developed.

distribution
The species is common in the Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe. It is also represented in the British Isles . In the north the occurrence extends to Scandinavia (Central Norway, Central Finland and Northern Sweden), in the south to North Africa, in the east to the Middle East and the Caucasus .
Way of life
The beetles are often found under the bark of conifers ( spruce and pine ), on freshly felled and debarked tree trunks and on tree stumps (including those of birch ). The beetles appear early in spring and can be observed until May. They presumably feed on mushrooms and plant juices.
