The flax breaker house near Rimbach

The Flachsbrechhaus is a listed building on the boundary of the Volkach district of Rimbach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . It is at the southern exit of the town on the KT37 district road.

history

The Rimbach flax breaker house was probably built in the second half of the 19th century. At that time it was already an anachronism because flax production had been displaced by the mass emergence of cotton since 1850. Originally, the flax crusher houses, similar to the bakery or shepherd's house, were used by the entire village population. After the flax harvest was over, small festivals were held there.

The flax in the buildings was broken and dried. Since warm air was required for this, fires were kindled around the house. That is why most of the flat breaker houses were built outside the villages and, as in Rimbach, on a lake. Flax production experienced a revival during the raw material shortages in World War II . The schoolchildren in the village were used to break and dry, but they had to hand over the material to the central flax kiln in Großlangheim .

Most of the flax crushing houses were demolished after the war at the latest. The little house in Rimbach survived this time because it was later used as a storage room by the local volunteer fire department . In the following years the house was used by the farmers of the village as a room for agricultural equipment. Today the house is listed as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .
