Flicker candle (glow lamp)

Flicker candles are light sources that imitate the flickering light of ordinary candles . These are specially designed glow lamps with an enlarged cathode surface . This consists of partially oxidized, uncleaned sheet iron, which is why the glowing light only partially covers the cathode surface. The positive ions accelerated by the cathode fall hit the cathode in a locally limited way and change its surface. This changes the running voltage slightly, which in turn causes the glow discharge to look for another surface with a lower running voltage. In normal glow lamps, the iron electrodes are cleaned by cathode sputtering before the lamp is completed. That is why the glow light is evenly distributed there.

Their energy consumption is relatively low and is three watts for standard lamps . Outwardly, they are very similar to ordinary light bulbs .

The flicker candles are not to be confused with other "flicker lights", such as light emitting diodes (LED), in which the flow of current is controlled by a small electronic circuit.
