Unofficial flag of Gotland

There is also an unofficial version of the Gotland flag. It is a Scandinavian cross flag , as found predominantly in the Nordic countries . The yellow background is covered with a green cross. The yellow background stands for the many fields, the fertile soil, the beaches of the island and the sun, the color of the green cross represents the green and the forest in the middle of the country.

The design was proposed in 1991 and is based on the unofficial flag of Öland to demonstrate the commonality as one of the two large Swedish Baltic Sea islands. With the reverse color scheme (yellow cross on a green background), the Öland flag resembles the Gotland flag.
