history

Historic flag? Flag of the AU between 2004 (1965) and 2010

The Organization for African Unity (OAU), the predecessor of the African Union, had existed since 1965 . From 2004, the AU initially adopted the flag with a wide, green stripe on top, followed by a small gold ribbon. Below that was a white stripe that had the African Union emblem in the center, followed by a small gold band and a wider green stripe at the bottom.

The colors of the flag had the following symbolic value:

  • Green symbolizes the African hope and striving for unity.
  • Gold stands for African prosperity and a good future.
  • The color white represents purity and Africa's quest for true friendship worldwide.
  • Red (hardly recognizable in the central ring) stands for African solidarity and the blood shed in the struggle for freedom.

The monochrome map of Africa in the middle of the flag is deliberately shown without borders and represents the unity of Africa.
