Flanthey

Flanthey belongs to the municipality of Lens VS in the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais , ( Switzerland ). It is a widely scattered, terraced wine-growing village above the Rhone Valley and includes the villages of Flanthey (730 m) and Chelin (750 m) as well as the hamlets of St-Clément, Condémines, Vaas and Valençon.

In Vaas there is a former hostel that was built in 1565 for Antoine Gilloz. It is an interesting building, the façades of which are painted with scenes from hunting and agriculture and with an inscription in French dialect: "Qui ne aura d'or, argen, ni credit, ni abit de lanne, quil hale bioere a la fontanne ».

The extensive vineyards in Flanthey and the surrounding area are mainly irrigated by two old suonen or watercourses, which are called “Bisses” in French. The «Bisse Sillonin» leads from the steep and imposing gorge of the Lienne above Saint-Léonard to Chelin and on to below the church of Flanthey. The walk alongside or on the Bisse from Flanthey to above St-Léonard is easy and safe. In the valley of the Lienne, however, the ascent is only recommended for people with a head for heights. The second bisse, the "Grand Bisse de Lens" is about 200 m higher and leads from the hinterland of Icogne around the Châtelard mountain above the villages of St-Léonard, Chelin, Flanthey to Chermignon .

In addition to the hiking trails along the suonen, the vineyards (sentier viticole or chemin du vignoble) leading through Flanthey are also something very special. The Valais Rebweg leads from Uvrier and Saint-Léonard below St-Clément via Ollon-Corin-Loc- Venthône - Miège to the wine metropolis of Salgesch , where you can find part of the famous Valais Wine Museum . Another, shorter vineyard path leads over the vineyard road to Valençon and from there on the hiking trail via Ollon - Corin-de-la-Crête - Corin-d'en Bas to Sierre to the Château de Villa with the beginning of the aforementioned wine museum and its Oenotheque.
