Heiligenbeil Air Base

The airbase Heiligenbeil was an air base of the Air Force of the Armed Forces near the East Prussian Heiligenbeil .

history

The air base was rebuilt between 1935 and 1936. In the northwest, two very large, three large, one medium and one large repair hangars were built. There were also other farm and accommodation buildings here. In the south there was another large and a medium hangar. The air base comprised a total of around 100 buildings. Flight operations began with the arrival of the air base command on October 1, 1936. The III./KG 153 was the first airborne unit to be stationed here from April 1936 . Various pilot schools and from 1939 to 1941 the 31st pilot training regiment were located here.

On 24./25. March 1945 Soviet troops occupied the area of ​​the air base. Since 1945 Heiligenbeil, which was renamed Mamonowo ( Russian Мамоново ) in 1947 , belongs to the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast .
