I./KG 6 emerged from I./KG 77 , and K.Fl.Gr. 106 became II./KG 6 and III./LG 1 became III./KG 6. The IV. (Supplementary) group was reorganized. Initially, the squadron was equipped with the Junkers Ju 88 . In 1944 the I. Group was equipped with Junkers Ju 188 . The squadron identification was 3E.

history

As early as October 1942, the 1st and 2nd groups of the squadron flew their first attacks on targets in Great Britain. In addition, the groups were in the French Creil ( location ) and Dinard ( location ), while the III. Group was still stationed in the East Prussian Heiligenbeil ( Lage ).

Due to the precarious situation in the Mediterranean, Groups I and II of the squadron relocated to the Sicilian Gerbini ( Lage ) from November . From there they intervened in the fighting for Tunisia .

In December 1942, the I. and II. Groups were relocated back to Beauvais ( Lage ) and Cormeilles ( Lage ) in northern France , where the III. Group was stationed in Rosieres ( Lage ). Together with other combat squadrons, it again launched attacks on Great Britain. In May 1943 it moved to southern France to intervene again in the fighting in North Africa. From June onwards, the squadron was placed under Air Fleet 2 in Italy. There it intervened in the fighting for Sicily and the Italian mainland . From September it moved back to northern France on the Channel coast .

From the beginning of 1944 to May 1944, all groups took part in the Steinbock enterprise . In addition, they were the IX. Air Corps subordinated to Air Fleet 3 . After the Allied landing in Normandy , it attacked the landing forces from Saint-André-de-l'Eure ( Lage ) and Villaroche ( Lage ), among others . Adjusting to the general withdrawal, the squadron moved to Brussels and further east. The last remaining machines were shut down in places in the Gotha / Erfurt area . The squadron was renamed to Kampfgeschwader (J) 6 (the (J) stood for hunting). In the area around Prague it was to be converted to hunting machines. Due to the war situation, this did not happen.
