The Base aérienne 110 Creil (BA 110) is a military base of the French Air Force ( Armée de l'air ) , as the 2016 military airfield was used. The base, which is named after Lieutenant-Colonel Guy de La Horie, lies in the region of Hauts-de-France in the department of Oise in the field Creils and the neighboring village of Verneuil-en-Halatte about three kilometers east of Creil. It now forms part of the "base de defense" (BdD) of the same name and is, among other things, the home base of the Armée de l'air's light transport aircraft .

history

The first landing in Creil, near what is now the JJ Rousseau high school, took place on August 17, 1910, by a Voisin biplane, piloted by Georges Legagneux. After the outbreak of the First World War , Creil became the base for observation aircraft of the types REP K and Farman MF7 .

In the period before the beginning of the Second World War , the Aerodrome was initially used for civilian purposes, then by the French air forces until the armistice.

During the German occupation of France, the airfield that exists today in the Wald d'Halatte was built for the German Air Force. For this purpose, among other things, two concrete runways were built. After a short interlude in June / July 1940 as a base for He 111P of the III. Group of Kampfgeschwaders 28 (III./KG 28) were stationed in Creil in the following years Ju 88A of a number of units rotating through Creil. During the Battle of Britain , the II. Group of Kampfgeschwader 76 (II.//KG 76) was stationed until October 1940 , followed some time later by the staff of the same squadron, which was here between March and June 1941.

After almost a year of reduced use, Creil was initially stationed in May 1942 with the staff and the II. Group of Kampfgeschwader 77 (S. and II./KG 77) and then between July and September of the I. Group (I./KG 77). Between June and October 1942, the 3rd squadron of reconnaissance group 122 (3./FAufkl Gr) was another special unit in Creil, which in addition to the Ju 88A also had some of the D series and Bf 109F in its portfolio.

The I./KG77 was replaced in September 1942 by the I. Group of Kampfgeschwader 6 (I./KG 6), which remained stationed here until November 1942. After another phase of reduced flight operations, which lasted several months, the III. Operated between March and June 1943. Group of KG 6 von Creil and the staff of the same squadron were here as the last Ju-88A user between August and December 1943.

Since the end of September 1943, at least part of the II. Group of Jagdgeschwader 2 (II./JG 2), which flew the Bf 109 G-6 until December 1943 , had been lying here . Their task was to ward off daytime attacks by bombers of the American Eighth Air Force . At the end of the year the group converted to the Fw 190A and the headquarters of the squadron (S./JG 2) was here, also equipped with the Fw 190A, between mid-May and August 1944. After the start of the Allied invasion of Normandy , the I . and III. Group, both stayed here until mid-July 1994.

The last German Air Force Association before the liberation of the area by the Western Allies was the I. Group of Kampfgeschwader 51 (I./KG 51), a jet formation equipped with the Me 262A , in the second half of August 1944 .

After the liberation of the area by the Allies, Airfield A.81 , Creil's Allied code name, was home to the 1st Transport Group (Provisonal) with its C-47, C-53 and UC-64 between September 1944 and May 1945 and thus an important logistics base of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), including for supplies during the Battle of the Bulge .

IGN aircraft

In 1947, the Institut Géographique National (IGN) took over the facility built by the Germans, which in addition to LeO 455 and Si 204 also used some decommissioned B-17s . Three years later, it was decided to develop the airfield into a modern NATO base for the Armée de l'Air , the construction work dragged on for seven years and could not be completed until 1958.

The first flying association was a school and calibration group, Escadron d'Entraînement et de Calibration 2/17 (EEC 2/17), which flew the vampires from mid-1954 . In December of that year, the 10th Fighter Squadron , 10e Escadre de Chasse , with two flying groups, EC 1/10 "Parisis" "and EC 2/10" Seine ", was reorganized. EEC 2/17 was initially subordinate to the squadron before it was fully integrated into this as the 3rd fighter group, EC 3/10 "Valois", in the spring of 1956. The first Mirage IIIC arrived at the EC 2/10 in 1969 and five years later the conversion to this type of aircraft also began for the EC 1/10. Another seven years later, in autumn 1981, the EC 1/10 began using the Mirage F1C , while the Mirage III had already been handed over to the EC 2/10 in the summer. The EC 1/10 left Creil in the spring of 1985 in the direction of the base 112 in Reims , the 10th Squadron and the EC 2/10 were disbanded in the following early summer and the base Creil closed.

The reopening as a training center for non-aviation activities took place in 1990 to replace the base 272 Saint-Cyr that was planned for closure.

CN-235M-200, ET 1/62

The new aviation use began in 1993, when Creil became the base of the CN-235 , which is still stationed here today . The first association was the transport group Escadron de transport 1/62 (ET 1/62) "Vercors", which between 1993 and 1994 and 1999 also operated Fennec and Twin Otter . In addition, Creil has been the administrative base of the ET 3/60 "Esterel" passenger transport aircraft stationed in Roissy since 1994 and, in addition to the ET 1/62, its "sister group", the ET 3/62 "Ventoux", has also been located here since 2011.

Since 2009 the airfield has been officially known as the “base de defense” (BdD), as it is no longer used exclusively by the air forces.

Shortly before the planned relocation of the " CASAs " to Évreux , a last flight day took place in Creil on June 29, 2016 in memory of the Battle of Verdun that had taken place 100 years earlier . The two squadrons "Vercors" and "Ventoux" moved with their "CASAs" to Évreux in July 2016, the last symbolic CN-235 flight took place on August 10 and flight operations were suspended on August 31, 2016.

Todays use

After flight operations were discontinued, the base currently accommodates a single flying squadron, the ET 3/60 "Estérel". The flight operations of their Airbus A310 (since 1993) and A340 (since 2006) are handled via Roissy .

Creil was home to a number of other (non-flying) support units that are not just part of the Air Force.
