The Schongau Air Base was a military airfield in the Upper Bavarian city of Schongau . It was located west of the city between Altenstadt and Schongau and is now almost completely overbuilt with residential and commercial areas.

The grounds of the air base was in 1938 for the Air Force of the Armed Forces built. It extended from west to east approximately from today's Sonnenstrasse in Altenstadt to today's Schönlinder Strasse in Schongau. In the north, the area was bordered by Altenstadter / Schongauer Strasse, and in the south by around today's Säulingstrasse. The airfield was oriented to the north, the Schongau substation is exactly on the former grass runway. The technical area with halls was in the northwest of the facility in what is now Altenstadt's industrial park, between Schäfgasse and Wettersteinstrasse. From 1939 onwards, mainly Luftwaffe training centers were stationed here, such as the Aviation Training Regiment 23 (later renamed Aircraft Command School A / B 23) and the Flaartillery School IV. With the IV. Group of Jagdgeschwader 3 (IV./JG 3) with the Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-8 and the II./JG 53 with the Messerschmitt Bf 109G / K, active flying units were also located here in the final phase of the Second World War .

After the American occupation in the spring of 1945, the airfield was given the Allied code designation Airfield R.79 . The Agfa factory in Altenstadt was set up in one of the hangars in the post-war period .

Almost nothing of the old buildings can be seen today. The former officers' mess , which today houses the St. Johannes kindergarten in Schongau, has been preserved.
