action

Flight of the Amazon Queen is set in 1949. Joe King owns the Amazon Queen freighter , a Ford Trimotor . Actress Faye Russel hires him and his mechanic Sparky to fly them to a location. In a thunderstorm over the Amazon jungle, the Amazon Queen is struck by lightning and crashes, which everyone involved survives. In an attempt to bring the group back to civilization, King crosses the path of scientist Dr. Eisenstein, who wants to transform the local natives into dinosaurs with the help of an invention. The aim of the player is to save the three protagonists and the plans of Dr. To thwart Eisenstein.

Characters

Joe King

The hero of the game is called Joe King and works in the logistics industry. He is the captain of the Amazon Queen, a rickety but still sprightly airplane. He and his infantile, comic-loving mechanic use it to transport Sparky packages and passengers. Joe has a girl in every port and knows how to deal with women. Its name is a reference to the English word joking .

Dr. Eisenstein

Frank Eisenstein ( Dr. Frank Ironstein ) is the game's crazy villain. Joe King must thwart his megalomaniac plans to achieve world domination with the help of his Dino-Ray. The Dino-Ray is a beam weapon that mutates humans into half-dinosaurs. Eisenstein wants to use the weapon to build a dinosaur army in order to achieve his goal.

Faye Russel

Movie star Faye Russel is Joe's favorite actress. Joe is supposed to take her with him at the beginning of the plot with the Amazon Queen . However, his worst competitor in the aviation business, the Dutchman Hans Anderson, has already had an eye on them.

Chandler Bob

Bob runs a grocer's shop in a pygmy village. He helps Joe rescue the kidnapped Princess Azura. In the German talkie version of the game, Bob is spoken by the actor Christoph Waltz , whose name in the credits was incorrectly spelled without tz .

Game principle and technology

Flight of the Amazon Queen is a point-and-click adventure . From Sprites composite characters act before hand-drawn, some animated scenes. The player can use the mouse to move his character through the locations and use the mouse buttons to initiate actions that allow the character to interact with his environment. Joe can find objects and apply them to the environment or other objects and communicate with NPCs in multiple-choice dialogues . As the story progresses, more locations will be unlocked.

Production notes

Flight of the Amazon Queen took almost four years to develop. Originally the team behind the game consisted of only three people - John Passfield and Steven Stamatiadis wrote the script, Passfield programmed together with Tony Ball, and Stamatiadis painted the graphics. One of the main sources of inspiration for the game's story and design was, according to Passfield, the adventure series Monkey Island by LucasArts . Only when a publisher was found in Renegade Software was it possible to finance the dubbing. The game's game engine , JASPAR (an abbreviation for "John And Steve's Programmable Adventure Resource"), was an in-house development by Passfield.

A separately included on the CD-ROM version text adventure , the spoiler includes the main game is under ScummVM playable. Since it cannot be accessed from the main game, little was known about it.

The game gained great fame after it was released as Free Software in March 2004 to support the then young ScummVM project. It can now be played on all current operating systems with the help of ScummVM .

The plane in which the protagonists in the adventure Belief & Betrayal fly from England to France is also named Amazon Queen.

reception

The German Amiga Games noted a gripping story interspersed with film-like cutscenes, which was presented brilliantly and varied and whose puzzles always seemed challenging but never unfair. All in all, Flight of the Amazon Queen is “probably the most atmospheric and exciting adventure game of 1995”. The German website Adventure-Archiv.com praised the story, characters and dialogues of the game and only criticized some of the long walks; overall, she described Flight of the Amazon Queen as a "competitive game".
