Raft sack

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A raft sack was a sack made of impregnated canvas or other material that was used as an aid to transfer soldiers and material across bodies of water.

description

The raft bag was stuffed with straw , hay , reeds , leaves or the like before use . The buoyancy was created by the displacement of the light stuffing material. Depending on the size of the sack, it could carry up to eight men. A large number of raft sacks could be placed in a row on the water and used as a base for a makeshift bridge made of wooden boards. The Wehrmacht had inflatable raft sacks in several sizes that were used as aids for various purposes.
