location

The memorial is located on Bahnhofsplatz, east of the historic Quedlinburger Neustadt. The monument stands on a pedestal in the middle of a roundabout where Bahnhofstraße, Rathenaustraße and Harzweg converge.

history

The statue was originally erected in 1901. The bronze figure depicts the Roman goddess Flora , the goddess of flowers and blossoms. The statue is holding a rose in her right hand. During the Second World War , the Flora was dismantled in 1944 and melted down for armament purposes.

In 1998 the Quedlinburg Medieval Association "Das Bergvolk" drew attention to the history of the statue and suggested that it be re-installed. In fact, a new flora was erected in 2001, 100 years after it was first installed. The two meter tall figure was cast in the Frank Herweg art and bronze foundry in Berlin . On the nearby bridge over the Bode there is a board that explains the history of the flora.

The newly poured flora is not registered in the Quedlinburg monument register.
