Flora Petrik (born November 12, 1994 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician (independent, candidate in the 2017 National Council elections with the KPÖ ) and former spokeswoman for the Young Greens .

Origin and family

Flora Petrik grew up in Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland . Her grandmother was the ÖVP politician Eva Petrik , her mother is the green politician Regina Petrik .

Training and political activity with the Young Greens

After graduating from school, Flora Petrik moved to Vienna, where she studied educational science and German.

At the age of 16, Petrik began to get involved with the Young Greens - the then still official youth organization of the political party The Greens. In 2011 she was involved in founding the Junge Grünen Burgenland, and in 2015 she was elected regional spokeswoman for the Junge Grünen Vienna.

She positioned herself for “open and honest drug policy”, feminist concerns such as reforming sex education or free contraceptives and abortions, and criticized the Eisenstadt ban on begging, for example.

On January 7, 2017, Petrik was elected national spokesperson at the Federal Young Greens Congress in St. Gilgen. Referring to the election of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen in 2016, who won against FPÖ candidate Norbert Hofer , she said at the time: “The last few months have shown that many people are ready to respond to their political concerns and demands Street to go. As a left-wing youth organization, we want to inspire many people for prospects for a fundamental improvement in society, even outside of the elections. Only together with many others can we counteract the politics of stepping down and right-wing agitation and successfully work for a just society. "

After some groups split off from GRAS, the official student organization of the Greens, and founded the new organization Green Students in 2016, the conflict escalated in 2017. Since the Young Greens showed solidarity with the Green students, the youth organization was finally established on Excluded from the Green Party on March 30, 2017.

KPÖ PLUS

In June 2017, Petrik announced that the Young Greens in the alliance KPÖ PLUS together with the Communist Party of Austria wanted to run in the Austrian National Council elections in 2017 . At the end of July, the alliance announced that Flora Petrik would be the top candidate for KPÖ PLUS alongside Mirko Messner and Ulli Fuchs. The party's demands include a halving of party subsidies and a limitation of politicians' salaries to 2,300 euros. The second focus should be the subject of housing, Petrik says: “Housing must not make you poor”, and: “We need a lot more community housing and public housing so that housing becomes affordable again. In addition, there is a need for rental price caps, the limitation of fixed-term rental contracts and effective measures against speculation in the housing market ”. Third point are the issues of work and social issues, here KPÖ PLUS calls for a reduction in working hours to 30 hours a week and a livelihood security for everyone.
