Flora of North America

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Flora of North America North of Mexico on the flora of North America is a multi-volume work that has been published continuously since 1993. The editor is the Flora of North America Editorial Committee.

The complete work should comprise 30 volumes, in 2011 16 volumes have already been published. Over 800 authors compile knowledge of all plants north of Mexico , including St. Pierre and Miquelon and Greenland . A web-based working platform, the FNA Internet Information Service (FNA IIS), is used. Several plant families are processed per band. In addition to the printed version, all information is published verbatim on the Internet. Once completed, the project will have cataloged more than 20,000 vascular plants and mosses , about 7% of the total number of species in the world.

Project history

As early as 1964, North American botanists, spurred on by the announcement that Volume 1 of Flora Europaea was about to be published, saw the need for a comprehensive botanical project for North America. In August 1964, the Council of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists (ASPT) appointed a committee to examine the feasibility of a Flora of North America . Under the chairmanship of Robert Folger Thorne , the committee of about 25 interested botanists met in Washington, DC in May 1966 and came to the conclusion that the creation of the Flora of North America would be desirable and feasible. The response to Thorne's request from many other botanists to get involved in the project was positive.

After six years of planning, the project was to start in autumn 1972. The National Science Foundation (NSF) made its support dependent on the willingness of the Smithsonian Institution to increase funding from year to year. After scrutiny, the Smithsonian Institution decided that it was unwilling to make such a guarantee unless Congress, in turn, guaranteed to support the institution each year. The National Science Foundation then withdrew its support and the project was suspended in the summer of 1973. Attempts to revive the project were unsuccessful.

In the spring of 1982, 22 botanists from across the United States and Canada met at the Missouri Botanical Garden to discuss a proposal from the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation and the Carnegie Museum to create the Flora of North America . In the same year the Canadian Botanical Association / L'Association Botanique du Canada passed a resolution in support of the project. At its annual meeting in August 1983, the American Society of Plant Taxonomists passed a resolution reaffirming its commitment to the creation of such a work. After further funds were added from third parties between 1983 and 1987, the project was unreservedly supported by the participating institutions.
