Aviation Doctor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term aviation physician colloquially describes a doctor who is officially appointed to carry out the medical assessment required for the acquisition and maintenance of the licenses of pilots and air traffic control personnel and to issue medical fitness certificates (certificate of fitness to fly, also referred to as medical ) on behalf of the competent licensing authority. Working as a flight doctor requires knowledge of the special conditions to which the human organism is exposed during flight, especially flight physiology .

Since the introduction of the European fitness guidelines JAR-FCL3, the aviation physician has been officially referred to exclusively as an aviation medical expert in Germany. In the English versions of the regulations of the European Aviation Safety Authority EASA , the flight doctor is referred to as the Aeromedical Examiner (AME).

Further training courses for aviation doctors take place in Germany at Lufthansa and the Bundeswehr . Completion of these courses does not yet entitle you to head an aviation medical examination center. The approval is granted exclusively by the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt for the Aeromedical Center and the aeromedical experts of classes 1 and 2. For aero-medical experts of the Bundeswehr (FlMedSachVBw) approval is granted by the Luftfahrtamt der Bundeswehr . It is worth noting here that flight medical experts are only allowed to carry out the initial examination of class 1 suitability if they have been approved by the Federal Aviation Office as (AeMC).

The requirements for the official appointment as an aviation medical expert (pilot's doctor) are in § 24e Air Traffic Licensing Regulations (LuftVZO) and in the First Implementation Ordinance for Air Traffic Control (1st DV LuftVZO). regulated.

Aviation doctors are organized in the German Aviation Medical Association.
