The Flugfeld is an intermunicipal residential and commercial area that will be developed jointly by the cities of Böblingen and Sindelfingen until 2031 . With a total area of almost 80 hectares, this project is one of the largest urban developments in southern Germany. The airfield is located directly on the Autobahn 81 Stuttgart – Singen. One third of the area is located on Sindelfinger, two thirds on the Böblinger district. With the development, a wasteland was closed between the two cities that previously housed Böblingen Airport . Some of the listed buildings were integrated into the new district.

The aim of the two cities was to develop the Flugfeld as a commercial and service area with a mixed use of production, services, research, education, living and green spaces. This also includes a medical service center and a technology competence center. Up to 7,000 jobs are to be created on the airfield by 2031, and the construction of residential units for around 4,000 residents is also planned.

history

Airport and military use

From July 1915 to 1918 there was an air base on the site, after the end of the war the airfield was closed and most of the facilities dismantled. From 1924, the state airport was set up on the site , and it was integrated into the international route network under the name Stuttgart-Böblingen Airport . In 1938 the airport was again taken over by the Air Force; When the war began in September 1939, civilian flight operations were completely stopped. From 1945 to 1992 the US Army used the site as a repair shop for its vehicles, among other things, after which the site was owned by the Federal Property Administration .

Development from 1992

In the summer of 2001 the cities of Böblingen and Sindelfingen decided to develop the site on their own. For the planning, renovation, development and marketing, they founded the Zweckverband Former Airport Area Böblingen / Sindelfingen in May 2002 . The architectural partnership AP Mory, Osterwalder and Vielmo from Stuttgart and the planning company Freiraum + Städtebau Hans Kienle won the first prize in the urban development competition.

Together with the planning association at the time, the working group created an urban development draft that was decided by the municipal councils of both cities as the basis for further urban development planning. In January 2004 the association decided on the name of the future city quarter, choosing the name Flugfeld . Since May 2004 the Zweckverband Former Airport Grounds has also given up its old name in order to further advance the development and marketing of the area as the Zweckverband Flugfeld Böblingen / Sindelfingen .

Urban design

Based on the winning design of an urban development competition from 2000, an urban development design was developed for the airfield and has since been updated several times. The character of the site is shaped by the interplay of different uses. Compacted building areas are opposed to larger open areas. The center is a green area with an 860 meter long lake. Individual sub-quarters with different uses have been settled around the lake.

Motorworld Region Stuttgart

The Forum area includes the listed buildings of the former Württemberg State Airport. In these, in connection with new buildings, the Meilenwerk project (now Motorworld Region Stuttgart ) was realized, which offers trade and services, especially for vintage cars . The technology competence center “Forum 1” is located in the building line between Hanns-Klemm-Platz and the train station, and the medical service center “medicum” is also located there.

In Park City , a residential area was near the train station. In addition to residential buildings, daycare centers, educational institutions and shops were also located there. To the east of this, the new Sindelfingen-Böblingen Clinic with around 700 beds is to be built on around 50,000 m² .

The urban planning provides for a long, relaxed row of buildings between the main thoroughfare Flugfeld-Allee leading through the airfield and the Langen See. A promenade was built along the lake shore. To the north of the street, the Am Wall industrial park is being built near the motorway entrance. The Sensapolis leisure facility has also been located here since 2008 . The airfield is separated from the federal autobahn 81 Stuttgart – Singen by an approximately two kilometer long earth wall.

The construction of high-rise buildings for offices and service companies is planned on the campus section . A gross floor area of 90,000 square meters is planned on the approx. 54,000 square meter sub-area ( floor area 1.0, floor area 1.6).

Harp Bridge

Harp Bridge

The long lake is spanned roughly in the middle by the "Harfenbrücke", a filigree foot and bike path bridge. It was designed by Schlaich Bergermann und Partner and inaugurated in October 2016. Their total length is 50 m, the span 47 m. The pylon is 15 m high, its legs are curved both in plan view and in side view and meet at the top to form a trapezoidal cross-section. 28 ropes carry the roadway. The total cost of the bridge was 1.1 million euros.
