The Aklavik Freddie Carmichael Airport ( IATA: LAC; ICAO: CYKD ) is an airport near Aklavik , Northwest Territories . The airport is located on the banks of the Peel Channel, in the delta of the Mackenzie River . Aklavik was the regional center but was prone to flooding.
In 1959, a new, larger airport ( Inuvik Mike Zubko ), connections to the highway, health facilities and other amenities were built in Inuvik , which is why the airport and the Aklavik region lost their importance. Aklavik is now a small, traditional settlement.
