Aklavik (Akłarvik, Inuktitut "place where bears are hunted") is a municipality in the Northwest Territories ( Canada ) with 594 inhabitants (according to the 2006 census), which is mainly inhabited by the Gwichin and the Inuvialuit . It is located north of the Arctic Circle , about 55 km west of Inuvik on the Mackenzie Delta. The municipality can only be reached from Inuvik in the winter months through the so-called "Ice Bridges" and by air.
Since Aklavik had to struggle again and again with flooding and erosion, the place was given up in 1961 in favor of Inuvik as the administrative center of the territorial government.
