The Aomori Airport ( Jap. 青森空港 , Aomori Kuko ) is the airport of the Japanese city of Aomori and is located about six kilometers southwest of the city. According to Japanese law, Aomori Airport is a 3rd class airport and currently only offers domestic connections with the exception of one connection to Incheon Airport near Seoul .

history

In 1964, the original Aomori Airport was opened with a 1200 meter long runway. In 1971 the runway was extended to 1,350 m and in 1972 to 1,400 m. After that there were only small extensions to the runway before a new airport was built between 1979 and 1987 because the old one could no longer be extended. The new airport opened in July 1987.

When the airport opened, it had a 2000 m long runway, which was expanded to 2500 m in 1990.

Between 2000 and 2005 there was the last extension of the runway, which is now 3000 meters long. In 2003, an ILS CAT III instrument landing system was installed.
