The Brest Airport ( Russian Аэропорт "Брест" ) ( IATA code : BQT , ICAO code : UMBB ) is an international airport in Belarus . The airport is twelve kilometers east of Brest and is located in the area of Selsavets Telmy in Brest Raion in Breszkaya Woblasz .
history
The decision to build the new airport near Brest was made in the early 1970s. The plan was to build one of the most modern airport complexes in the USSR . The old military airfield of Brest, which dates back to Polish times, was expanded into a civilian airport after the Second World War and, in addition to transporting passengers and freight, was also used for agricultural purposes. In 1968 the old airport operated eleven scheduled flights a day. In the age of jet airplanes , the old Brest airport could only receive machines with propeller turbines and its days were numbered.
On July 30, 1976, the first passenger aircraft with Tupolev Tu-134 A jet engines landed at the new airport .
Brest Airport is one of the seven international airports in Belarus.
