The international airport of Flores-Santa Elena "Mundo Maya" (span: Aeropuerto Internacional Mundo Maya, Flores ) is an international airport near Flores in the north of Guatemala . It is located in the center of the departments of Peten , a few kilometers east of Flores in Santa Elena. The airport owes its importance mainly to the tourist attraction Tikal . In addition to domestic flights, there are connections to Belize , Mexico and the USA . It is also used militarily .
Incidents
- On January 18, 1986, another airplane of the Ecuadorian SAETA was flown into the ground, this time a Caravelle VI-N ( aircraft registration HC-BAE ). On behalf of Aerovias Guatemala, the aircraft was flying the 270-kilometer route from Guatemala City La Aurora Airport to Flores Airport when, after a first missed approach, it hit the terrain 8 kilometers from the target on the second attempt and was completely destroyed. In this CFIT ( Controlled flight into terrain ) all 94 occupants were killed, 6 crew members and 88 passengers. To date (January 2020) it was the most serious aircraft accident in Guatemala.
