The Moshoeshoe I International Airport ( IATA code : MSU , ICAO code : FXMM ), built in 1985, is an international airport near the town of Mazenod , about 20 kilometers south of Maseru , the capital of Lesothos . From the late 1960s to the 1980s, Leabua Jonathan Airport (now Mejametalana Airport ), named after Lesotho's then Prime Minister Leabua Jonathan (1914–1987), was the country's international airport. However, this is now only used for military purposes.

The airport is named after Moshoeshoe I († 1870), the founding father of the Basotho people . It has two passenger terminals, which are open from 5:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and a freight terminal.

The nearest commercial airports are all in South Africa : Bloemfontein (128 km), Mthatha (256 km), Pietermaritzburg (275 km), Kimberley (280 km) and Margate (310 km).

Airlines and connections

Since Lesotho no longer has a state airline since 1997, international flights are mainly operated by South African Airways (operating airline: Airlink ), mostly to Johannesburg (flight time 1 hour 10 minutes). Domestic flights are operated by Mission Aviation Fellowship and Mountain Airways .

reachability

There is a bus that leaves Maseru every hour. Taxis are also available. Shared taxis to the airport depart from the Mafika Mall in Maseru .

The German Foreign Office wrote for many years: The new bypass road to Maseru Airport has recently been the scene of frequent car theft. It should definitely be avoided at night.
