The airport Bauerfield ( English Bauerfield Airport ) is the international airport of Vanuatu . It is located near the capital Port Vila .
During the Second World War , Port Vila was used by the US armed forces as an important air base in the Pacific from 1942 , which explains the name of the airport.
The airport is the home base of the national airline Air Vanuatu .
Due to the poor condition of the runway, Virgin Australia , Air New Zealand and Qantas Airways have suspended flight operations since January 2016. Air Vanuatu continues to fly. (As of April 2016)
