The previously planned Poti International Airport ( Georgian ფოთის საერთაშორისო აეროპორტი ) is located on the eastern edge of the port city of Poti in Georgia .

location

It is separated from the city by the Rioni River. Extensive swamps and wetlands stretch south of the airfield, while fields and forests to the east and north.

history

Military airfield

The airfield was of great strategic military importance for the Soviet Union (airspace and border surveillance) on the Black Sea , to the NATO state Turkey and Iran . It was closed after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s , as a profitable operation was inconceivable at the time.

International airport plans

The Georgian government has included the Poti airport in an economic development program, and the ambitious goal is to further develop it into the most important airport in the Caucasus , said Georgian President Saakashvili at the opening of a free trade zone that has also been established there.

The Poti International Airport, which is being built on the Georgian Black Sea coast with financial support from the United Arab Emirates (financial aid amounting to one billion US dollars) will have the longest taxiway in the Caucasus region. The small population near the airport and the topographically favorable location would be an advantage. The most modern radar equipment for airfield operations is already installed on site. The major Georgian tourist centers Mestia , Batumi and Poti want to cooperate with the new airport.

The airport was originally scheduled to reopen in 2012, but was not yet completed by 2015. With the change of government of the Georgian Dream, construction was officially suspended for ecological reasons. Alternatively, there are plans to build an additional international airport about 30 km north in Anaklia .

New Europe, March 7, 2011, accessed on May 16, 2011 (English): “The Poti International Airport will be the largest in the Caucasus, Trend quoted Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili as saying at the opening of the free economic zone. The Poti International Airport will have the largest runway in the Caucasus. We have already established a modern radar system, and this will be the airport for both Batumi and Poti. Major tourist centers such as Mestia, Batumi and Poti will operate at the airport, Saakashvili said. In his speech, he mentioned the country's modernization plan for 2015, according to which Poti's population will hit at least 100,000, Batumi's at least 250,000, and Kutaisi's 250,000-300,000. "
