The Santa Lucía airport is a planned Mexican airport on the area of ​​a military airfield , the Base aérea n.º 1 Santa Lucía of the Fuerza Aérea Mexicana , named after "General Alfredo Lezama Álvarez". It is located in the municipality of Tecámac about 40 km northeast of downtown Mexico City .

The new President of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced at the end of 2018 that the military airfield would be expanded into a civil airport with two runways. The military base is to be relocated for this purpose.

history

The base was completed in 1952 to replace the Campo Aéreo Militar de Balbuena (now the Jardín Balbuena neighborhood of Mexico City). The planes stationed in Balbuena were not moved to Santa Lucía until 1959.

Military use

The Air Force Base No. 1 Santa Lucía is home to 7,500 posts (as of 2018), a number of flying and non-flying units. The flying units are divided into two groups.
