The Ugolny Airport ( Russian Аэропорт Угольный ) is a commercial airport in Russia . It is located about 15 km east of the city of Anadyr , capital of the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug , not far from the Ugolnye Kopi settlement .
The airport was built in the 1950s as a bomber base due to its strategic location not far from the United States. However, the airport was already used for civilian purposes during the Cold War. The 171st fighter regiment with Su-15TM interceptors was last stationed here. After 1992, the military units were withdrawn, but the airport is still intended for military use.
Scheduled flights currently consist of Moscow-Vnukowo (with UTair ) as well as Khabarovsk and Magadan (with Yakutia Airlines ). The airport is also the hub of the local airline Chukotavia with a large number of domestic flights within the Autonomous Okrug .
