Ugolnyje Kopi ( Russian У́гольные Ко́пи ) is an urban-type settlement in the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug in the far northeast of Russia . It has 3368 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is about eight kilometers as the crow flies east of the administrative center of the Anadyr Autonomous Okrug . Ugolnye Kopi is separated from the city by the three to five kilometers wide estuary of the Anadyr River , not far from its left (northern) bank, it is located.

Ugolnye Kopi is the administrative center of the Rajons Anadyr .

history

The settlement was created in connection with the development of brown coal deposits for the fuel supply of the region and the construction of an airport . First of all, the settlement Shakhtyorski (literally "miners' settlement"), located seven kilometers northwest of the coast, was built , which received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1960, but has since been abandoned. This is also where Anadyr's first airfield, built in the 1930s, was located.

In 1968, Ugolnyje Kopi (literally “coal mines”), where the center of coal mining had moved, became an urban-type settlement, mainly as a mining settlement. A new, larger airport was built east of the settlement from the 1950s, which mainly served the strategic bomber forces of the Soviet air forces , but also served in a demarcated part for civil air traffic to Anadyr and Chukotka.

In 1997 the administration of Anadyr Raion was transferred from Anadyr to Ugolnye Kopi, while Anadyr remained the administrative center of the Autonomous Okrug. After the union of the Anadyr Rajon with the adjoining Beringowski Rajon to the south to form a new Zentralny Rajon ("Central Rajon") on May 30, 2008 Ugolnye Kopi remained its center. Since November 18, 2008, the new Rajon has been called Anadyr again.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main branch of the economy is still the declining coal production. In addition, Ugolnyje Kopi plays a role as an administrative center and, because of the nearby airport, as a transport and supply center.

Anadyr-Ugolny Airport ( ICAO code UHMA ), located three kilometers east of the settlement, is the main access point and air traffic center of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug . It is served by scheduled flights from Moscow , Magadan , Khabarovsk and Vladivostok , has connections to all local airports in the Autonomous Okrug and charter flights to the United States ( Nome , Anchorage ). The airport has not been used regularly for military purposes since the early 1990s. There is a local road network around the settlement and the airport; the connection to the city of Anadyr is maintained by ferry in summer and by an ice road in winter .
