Alkatwaam ( Russian Алькатваа́м ) is a village (selo) in the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug ( Russia ) with 299 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The village is located on the right bank of the river Alkatwaam , which is about 15 kilometers north in the southern part of Anadyrgolfs the Bering Sea ends.
Alkatwaam belongs to the Anadyrski district and is located almost 200 km as the crow flies south-southeast of the district and district administrative center of Anadyr . It is the seat and the only locality of the rural municipality of the same name (selskoje posselenije).
history
The village was founded in 1953. The name derived from the river name, adapted to Russian, goes back to the Chukchi ʼԓкытвээм (Ylkytweem) or Элӄэтвээм (Elkhetweem) and accordingly means either “hard snow river”, which could refer to long-standing snow bridges , or “water-rich river” ( ʼы yl for "snow" and кыт , kyt for "hard", or элӄэт , elkhet for "rich in water"; вээм , weem for "river").

Alkatwaam is connected by a road to the Beringowski urban-type settlement about 15 km to the south-east (until 2008 the administrative seat of the Rajon) and the coast, which is another 5 km away, where there is a seaport and an airport.
