Enmelen ( Russian Энмеле́н ; Chukchi Энмыԓьын ) is a village (selo) in the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug ( Russia ) with 367 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The village is located about 320 km as the crow flies east of the administrative center of the Anadyr Autonomous Okrug in the southern part of the Chukchi Peninsula , on the northeastern bank of the Anadyr Gulf of the Bering Sea . It is located at the northeastern foot of a 402  m high rocky summit of the Bering - Cape | (mys Beringa) forms. The Enmyljyn river (corresponding to the Chukchi name of the place) flows into the Anadyrgolf about 5 km north of Enmelen, while a cape of the same name with the 581  m high Pnyksun peak is located about 8 km south-east.

Enmelen belongs to the district of Prowidenija; it is from the eponymous administrative seat, the settlement Prowidenija , 140 km in a north-westerly direction. The economic basis of the village is reindeer herding and hunting of marine mammals.

history

Enmelen was first mentioned in the 18th century. The name refers in Chukchi to the location not far from a rocky mountain ridge (from энм , enm "rock"; ылвын , ylwyn for a kind of mountain ridge ).

Until the Prowidenija district was formed in 2015, Enmelen was the seat and only village of a rural community of the same name (selskoje posselenije) within the Prowidensky Rajons .

traffic

Enmelen is not connected to the Russian road network, but is connected to the nearest town of Nunligran , a good 30 km to the south-east, via an unpaved road. Otherwise, the place can only be reached by water or helicopter .
