Ostrownoje ( Russian Островно́е ) is a village (selo) in the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug ( Russia ) with 384 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). The place is located on the banks of the Little Anjui and is about 690 kilometers from the capital of the region, Anadyr .
history
When the Russians began exploring Kolyma and Chukotka, an ostrog was built near the present-day location . The ruins of the Ostrog can still be seen not far from the town. The Ostrog was originally located on an island, but was moved to the banks of the river due to frequent flooding. The place name Ostrownoje is derived from this (Остров / Ostrow is the Russian word for island).
In December 1930, the Chukchi National Circle was founded, with Ostrownoje becoming the seat of Vostochnoi Tundry ("Eastern Tundra Rajon"). Later the seat was moved to Anjuisk , today the seat of the Rajon is in Bilibino , founded in 1955 , the Rajon is now called after the city of Bilibinski rajon .
In Ostrownoje the first collective farm was founded by the Chukchi, it was called Turvaurgyn (“New Life” in Chukchi ), which also had a radio transmitter . The kolkhoz was later converted into a normal farm.
population
According to an estimate, 420 people lived in Ostrovnoye in 2006. The place recorded a significant increase in population compared to the previous year, when it was assumed that there were 355 inhabitants. One reason for this is the Kinross Gold company’s Kupol mine , which digs for gold and silver near the village .
In the 2010 census, Ostrownoje had 384 inhabitants, in January 2012 379 inhabitants. The majority of the population is made up of indigenous peoples such as the Chukchi , Evens and Nenets , in 2006 it was around 80%, the largest other population group are Russians .
